Secrets of Initiation & The Spirit of Alchemical Hermeticism with David Pantano
David Pantano is the author of Alchemical Hermeticism: The Secret Teachings of Marco Daffi on Initiation. This book translates many previously unavailable writings of this enigmatic mid-20th century Italian sage, complimented by a compelling biography comprised of Pantano's research. Tune in to discover just who was the Baron Richardo Ricciardelli, aka Marco Daffi, and what occult societies permeated Italy during his time? Topics include anamesis, initiation and aristocracy, hermetic healing methods, psychic abilities and past life consequences.
In the Plus+ Extension we dig deeper into Hermetic ideology, such as the laws of the source, ontological creationism, the powerful magic of names, monadic phagocitation and the River Lethe, Eonic encounters in the astral planes, and starting points for self-initiation practices.

Core themes
The Baron, the Fraternity of Miriam and a Karmic Defect
Pantano opens with the biography. Baron Ricciardo Ricciardelli was born in Naples in 1900 and died in 1969, the eldest son of a rich landowning family with property in Rome and throughout central and southern Italy. He collected university degrees, but his real interest was esotericism. A difficult arranged marriage with a Baroness of the Roman nobility sent him to a doctor who happened to head the Roman academy of the therapeutic magical fraternity of Miriam, which Pantano compares to the Golden Dawn. That doctor introduced him to Giuliano Kremmerz, who diagnosed not a physical problem but a karmic defect lodged deep in the psyche.
Anamnesis and the Egyptian Past Life Cliche
Kremmerz taught Ricciardelli anamnesis, a term Pantano traces to the ancient Pythagoreans and Plato, meaning a descent into altered states to separate the historical self, the conditioning laid on by family, society and work, from the innate archetypal self. Through it Ricciardelli identified a previous life as a Libyan physician, Marco Hecdaf, rendered in Italian as Marco Daffi, cursed after an illicit affair at a pharaoh's court. Chance notes that a solid eighty percent of past life explorers report an Egyptian priesthood. Pantano does not call it delusion, arguing these are sacred representations, universal archetypes the conscious mind dresses in whatever imagery it currently has available.
Aristocracy, the Tripartite Order and Loaded Numbers
Asked why Italian and French noblemen kept turning up in the same initiatory practices as the old priesthoods, Pantano says it is the first time he has been asked, then points to a tripartite structure buried in the Western psyche: royalty, the sacerdotal class and the working class, with the merchant class arriving later. Those layers resurface in modern language, so today's royalty, he suggests, are Musk, Bezos and Zuckerberg. Chance raises the 33 he keeps seeing in crash and shooting coverage and reads 666 as the magic square of the sun. Pantano stays cool: symbols are semiotic, they point elsewhere, and you control their value.
Hermetic Medicine, from Kremmerz to Tuning Forks
Pantano calls Kremmerz a miracle worker on the strength of documented records: patients conventional medicine had given months to live went on for years, saw illness go into remission, or at least died with dignity. He is careful that theurgy is only one strand of hermetic medicine, alongside the valorization of herbal instruments infused with energy. Kremmerz held a naturopathic degree and harmonized his approach to the individual, working the root causes, repression or ancestral legacies, not just symptoms. Chance describes his own biofield tuning practice with tuning forks, and Pantano cites his foreword writer Valerio Tumasini, a Rome naturopath working with bioresonance.
Virtue as Vir, Marketers as Magi, and a Dream About Forgetting
Virtue, Pantano says, is not decorum but vir, the Indo-European root for hero, one step above humanity and one below the gods, reached by purgation and the seven virtues tied to the seven illuminating lights. Chance ties this to the word virtual, the avatar taken on without the verve. Pantano answers with Douglas Hofstadter, golems, images without soul, and argues corporations are the true magical practitioners, running the AIDA model and the sympathies and antipathies Paracelsus, Ficino and Giordano Bruno wrote about. In his outro Chance recounts monadic phagocytation, the river Lethe, and a dream of dying and being reborn that showed him why we forget.
Quotes
“To actually go inside yourself to discover your archetypal self, the self that is the root of who you are and the historical self being just one incarnation of that archetypal self.”
“It's almost a cliche at this point, and you have to wonder about how much of that is belief affecting a person versus how much of that is reality.”
“Symbols by their very nature have a semiotic component. In other words, they don't have much value in themselves but they point to meanings, the significance elsewhere.”
“Essentially we use tuning forks to sweep through the energy field, the six foot space around the body in all directions.”
“Virtue comes from the ancient Latin word vir, which is an ancient Indo-European meaning for like a hero, for a true man.”
“The way that modern technology is almost a plagiarism of occultism or natural human psychic tendencies that we use the word virtual now to describe almost like a pseudo embodiment of the avatar.”
“Corporations are smart. They're aggressive. They're hawks. They are the magical practitioners. They've taken these lessons of how to control minds and how to control behavior, these magical teachings and applied it.”
“To the biofield, it doesn't necessarily matter if a memory or a belief is of something that truly even happened for it to have an effect on someone's energy flow.”
