Core themes
America's Pluto Return and Group Vampirism
Emily frames 2020 through America's Pluto return, a transit no human lifespan is long enough to see, since Pluto rules the subconscious and the unconscious shadow, personal and collective. She expects what the cheery histories leave out, from wars and slavery to forced sterilization in the 1920s, to surface as the return goes exact in 2022, and stresses that its nature is surprise: we do not yet know what is really going on. Chance widens vampirism to institutions, arguing the federal government acts as a group parasite echoing the taxation without representation story, and hopes the result is a revolution in consciousness rather than a bloody one.
How Vampire Folklore Maps Energy Theft
Emily traces the vampire back at least to Mesopotamia and the Babylonian precursors of the Hebrew Lilith folklore, a demonic woman who drinks the blood of children, and forward to Twilight. For two thousand years, she says, life energy was understood as blood, hence the laws about bloodlines, consuming blood and slaughter; now the question is what we may take of another person's energy and attention. The bite leaves three choices, defeating the vampire, being destroyed, or becoming one, and she ties the last to how harm gets passed on. Chance adds the older tales of nightly visits that weaken a victim until they must feed on others.
Joe Slate's Research on Psychic Vampires
Chance reads from Psychic Vampires by Joe Slate, a research book built on case studies, which sorts vampires into twelve types. He singles out the narcissistic vampire, with its grandiose self-importance, fragile self-esteem and lack of empathy, and admits it described his own younger behavior. Slate's list of effects on repeated victims runs from chronic fatigue and poor concentration to sleep disturbances and irritability, and Chance adds that the book finds many of the same symptoms in the vampire. Its answer, as Chance relays it, is teaching both the drained and the drainer to connect to a cosmic source Emily says cannot be bled dry.
Habit, Multitasking and Draining Yourself
Emily argues nothing is bad in itself, but letting social media, the news or email dictate your life out of habit hands them the time and attention that could feed what you care about, and if cosmic energy sounds too crazy, plug into nature. Chance admits gaming on his phone while working and finding his work full of mistakes, since nobody has more than 100 percent of their attention to split. That leads to what Slate calls parasitic vampirism, draining yourself. Emily describes a multi-elemental self whose mind wants busyness and body wants comfort, and suggests five or ten minutes of meditation to pull it back into unity.
Boundaries, Samskaras and a Five-Step Defense
Emily calls sharing energy essential; one-way taking is what throws things off balance, and you never truly have to give anyone anything, even when boundaries carry earth plane consequences. In yoga, she explains, practice burns the samskaras, the latent reactive tendencies, and she urges listeners to stand in the truth rather than believe the Pluto return's lie that the world is simply awful. Chance warns against vampirizing yourself over a lapsed routine, and in the outro he walks through a five-step technique he reads aloud: a body scan, focusing on the solar plexus, self-infusion, cosmic infusion through upturned palms, and a hand clasp that cues the whole practice.
Quotes

“The real important thing to recognize, and I'll reiterate it over and over again for the rest of my life to people, is that spiritual energy is your attention span.”
“When I think about vampires, like the energy vampires, I just think you can't bleed something dry that's infinite.”
“If you live backwards, you're evil. So you're living backwards when you're seeking attention, because what you should be seeking is to pay attention.”
“Once we learn to not drain ourselves, we'll probably learn not to either allow ourselves to be drained or to drain others in turn because we'll feel whole.”
“Imagination is not fake, guys. It's actually a sensory apparatus and a creative capacity.”
