Keith Thompson | Psyche & The UFO Paradox Symbolic and Mythic Patterns In The World Soul
Keith Thompson is the author of The UFO Paradox: The Celestial and Symbolic World of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena. As a lifetime researcher of contact lore and a student of philosophy, psychology, and mythology, Keith Thompson is just the man for the job when it comes to wrapping our minds around the strange reports of non-human intelligences & UAPs. Folding in depth psychology, Jungian archetypes, synchronicity, and what Keith sees as evidence of latent human superpowers, this episode goes a long way past the "little green men from Mars," trope, into the uncharted territory of the collective unconscious.
In the Plus+ Extension, we consider the myth of Proteus in the context of "the phenomena" and its shapeshifting manifestations, exploring the constructive & correlative elements of intelligence in general. We investigate why scientific empiricism is so antithetical to the fundamental novelty of contact, and continue pulling the Jungian thread to determine if the external world can truly be mapped by uncovering the depth of the human psyche.

Core themes
Past the Spaceship Assumption
Chance Garton opens by naming the reflex Keith Thompson attacks in The UFO Paradox, that saying you believe in UFOs is heard as saying you believe in extraterrestrial spaceships. Thompson answers with a story about Jacques Vallee advising Steven Spielberg on Close Encounters of the Third Kind, where Spielberg conceded the extraterrestrial hypothesis does not fit the complexity of the data but said outer space is what audiences expect. Thompson allows craft could come from elsewhere, yet insists the harder question is where here and there even are.
Reading UFOs as Allegory
Thompson explains why he frames the phenomenon as allegory, using Orwell's Animal Farm and Kafka's The Trial with its accused man Joseph K. In each, a surface story never mentions the sunken story below it, yet the reader senses it instantly. Applied to UFOs, the surface is flyovers, radar returns, thermal signatures and military hardware motifs, while the buried story questions the line Western science draws between objective and subjective. Craft register as physical events, then split, change shape, sink into ground or dissolve into colored orbs. That contradiction is the paradox of the title.
Symptoms, Ghosts and Family Systems
Chance Garton shares a biofield tuning case of his own in which a family memory surfaced in a client's energy field, his example of symptoms as symbols. Thompson then recounts psychiatrist Carl Whitaker deliberately breaking the therapeutic frame by inviting whole families into sessions, discovering the identified patient was really the symptom bearer for a multigenerational field. Whitaker told him he works with the dead all the time, meaning the ghosts still carried by a family. Thompson links this to reports of abductions running through several generations alongside telepathy and psychokinesis.
Mythology, Tricksters and Initiation
Asked why a UFO book leans on Hermes, Mercury, Coyote and Raven, Thompson says the phenomenon behaves like a trickster, confounding the Apollonian demand for clear binary answers. Human cognition may only be thirty thousand years old and far more restrictive than what it is trying to map. He draws on Joseph Campbell, whom he knew personally, and the monomyth, comparing indigenous initiation rites where masked men spirit boys away to a cosmic initiation now underway. Jung's individuation becomes cosmic individuation, and Chance stresses that individual means undivided, not separate.
The Bobber and a Story Keith Held Back
Thompson's central image is a fishing bobber. One curious fish swims high enough to glimpse the surface and learns it has always lived in water, the way UFOs mark the edge of a larger nature we have talked ourselves out of, echoing Donald Hoffman's claim that space and time are doomed. He then shares the near death experience he withheld from his earlier book Angels and Aliens, nearly drowning off Oahu, watching the body that was Keith from outside it, hearing his friend Mary's words from the shore, and returning escorted by two dolphins.
Quotes
“Unlike many other researchers in the field instead of fitting the data into an overarching conclusion We're asking the question. Why can't we figure this out rather than what is this in this conversation?”
“It's why Western science is not very good most of the skeptics on this subject are not really skeptics They they take the role of what I call debunkers, which is really not a scientific enterprise to simply rule a phenomenon out of bounds Categorically, they'll say things like that didn't happen”
“That's a long answer to why do I bring in mythology because we need different way think mythologically Because the phenomenon may be thinking mythologically we need to think in terms of riddles”
“I think it's actually bringing something that we have pushed away It's actually inviting us to see something these beings these presences Didn't just go away during the past 300 years of scientific materialism when they were simply dismissed The phenomenon didn't get the memo that it doesn't exist. So it continues to exist”
“the mysteries of our existence particularly Through astrophysics have now been explained away to the point where they hold Very little awe inspiring significance to the individual and how much energy is lost In your experience of day-to-day life when everything being explained away no longer gives you that Just fresh-faced childlike experience of walking outside”
“So the fish comes back and says we live in water I now know we live in water because there's something that is not water So that metaphor it's a metaphor, right? It's a what's a figure of speech to think of the ufo as a bobber that is trying to catch our attention”
“Looking at friends on the on the shore looking at the body That was keith and I saw that it was keith But that couldn't be keith because I am the eye that used to think it was living inside that body”
“I think the reality is not an illusion. It's an allusion And it alludes to more than just the physical The metaphysical it alludes to reality external reality alludes to your inner world reality But illusion it ain't Definitely not something's happening. You're here. I'm here something's happening”
