Jack Kelley returns to InnerVerse to discuss his new book The Atlantis Puzzle, a companion to his documentary of the same name. This conversation goes beyond the film into the philosophical core of Plato's story, including the esoteric writing techniques Plato used, why Atlantis was never about a sunken continent in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and what the cataclysm at the heart of the myth was really meant to warn us about.
In this session: the work of Leo Strauss in reviving esoteric reading after centuries of academic suppression, the three reasons esoteric writing has existed across history (defensive, pedagogical, and protective), why Socrates was put to death and why Plato then chose to write anyway, the structural conflict between traditional society and philosophy that Plato dramatizes through the Atlantean war, the often overlooked role of the Protothenian society as a stand-in for the rational utopia of the Republic, the strange omission of the third Hermocrates dialogue, and the deeper meaning of both civilizations destroying each other in the same cataclysm.
We also get into the theory-versus-practice dichotomy as the same eternal tension lived out at the scale of the individual seeker, the difference between high-context and low-context communication cultures, Plato's dialogue Statesman as a possible blueprint for reconciling tradition and rationality, the parallels to the Roman Republic and the modern American experiment, and why the Atlantis parable may be more relevant now than at any point since Plato wrote it.
